Ball gowns have very full skirts and generally will look beautiful on any body type, unless the bride is very short and small. In this case, it may be overwhelming to her small frame. They're usually made of light, flowing fabric. They're also excellent for pregnant brides, because they provide extra room in the waist, making them a comfortable choice. Picture yourself on your wedding day. What are you wearing? What silhouette is your gown? What fabric? Is it embroidered or beaded? What color is it? With so many choices for the dress, it can be overwhelming to look through hundreds or thousands of them. You may be making a decision based on a dress which is too large or too small. This is where deciding on a silhouette beforehand can help you. Besides the relief of slipping into something less constrained and more personalised at the end of the day's formalities, it's the romantic symbolism of the going-away dress that appeals most. If she is starting off in an open motor, she wears a suitably small motor hat and a wrap of some sort. If she is going on a train or boat, she wears a 'travelling' dress, such as she would choose under ordinary circumstances. She should not dress as though she is about to join a circus parade or the ornaments on a Christmas tree, unless she wants to be stared at and commented upon in a way that no one of good breeding can endure."

Tempting as it is to drive off at the end of my wedding day in circus attire, and having tried in vain to secure a small motor hat, I opted to design my own going-away dress, with the help of Designer Alterations, a dressmaking service favoured by the likes of Elle Macpherson and Jemima Khan.

Having selected a vintage-inspired damson and cream Liberty sailboat-print fabric, I head down to the company's Battersea offices, where head dressmaker Minnie Ee Gin takes my measurements and asks me to describe the dress - a bodiced, Roland Mouret-style three-quarter-length number - I have tailored in my head down to the last stitch.

A few days later, a selection of hand-drawn designs land at my door, and I am able to decide on every last detail, from the built-in corsetry and lining, to the piping and front, back or side slits. After a lifetime of stylistic compromise (most women will agree that not a single item in their wardrobe is without a niggle), being able to customise a dress as one might a wedding gown, only with the knowledge that it will be worn again, is bliss.

"Because weddings have become so much more about the gown, the going-away dress can be like a second wedding dress, only much more affected by current trends," says Astrid Joss, the shopping editor of

Brides

magazine. "In the Sixties, people went for that Breakfast at Tiffany's look with a high-collared neck. In the Seventies you had big sleeves. Nowadays, women who don't have one made might go for a Temperley dress or whatever else is 'in' and practical. You'd look ridiculous in a wedding dress at Heathrow, but something not too far removed from the elegance of the day with a matching cover-up needs to be chosen for those who plan to escape immediately afterwards."

Hicks's spring/summer 2010 collection has a selection of lengths and shapes, as do Libelula (a label created by Sophie Cranston, who worked with Alice Temperley). On the high street, Oasis and Jigsaw have tailored designs with matching shrugs or jackets.

Celebrities, so often templates for such trends, are rarely spotted in their GADs, unless sold in a package to a glossy magazine. However, Grace Kelly was pictured in her going-away outfit of a two-piece suit, gloves and hairpiece, while Princess Diana wore a customised pink ensemble by David Sassoon of Bellville Sassoon as she and Prince Charles headed to the Mountbatten family home in Hampshire.

While the resurgence of the going-away dress will be welcomed by most women, a more worrying wedding trend may be afoot. "In our metrosexual world, it's very possible that men's going-away outfits will be the next thing," cautions Joss. Which may be where the circus attire comes in.

With fuller figures, it's important to look for dresses that cinch and hug at the waist so you show off your beautiful curves in the right way. Ballgown-style A-line/Princess silhouettes allow you do that with ease, as the fitted bodice and waist draws the eye in at the waist and mid-section through the full skirt. If you're shorter and have a fuller, hourglass shape, look for a dropped waist A-line/Princess shape instead. Islamic fashion lets women cover up in style

London, England (CNN) -- Just because a woman covers up it doesn't mean she can't show off her individual style. That is the belief of a growing number of fashion designers in the Middle East who are cutting conservative clothes with fashionable flair.

Traditionally the Islamic headscarf is a symbol of modesty, but today more and more Muslim women are dressing in eye-catching outfits, albeit with their heads covered.

"Modesty is not the opposite of fashion, and fashion is not about showing more of my body," said Amina al-Jassim, a Saudi designer who makes haute-couture abayas, the long-black cloaks typically worn by more conservative Muslim women, which are also mandatory in Saudi Arabia.

Just 10 years ago it was rare to see women wearing abayas with bright colorful accents and intricate embroidery walking on the streets of the Gulf. Today, they are a common site and their outfits are becoming more more elaborate and bold as the market for such clothing expands.

"What we are seeing now is a generation of local women who are aware of western fashion, educated overseas. Along with many other designers in the region, al-Jassim also designs eveningwear and travel clothes that break Islamic dress code, but are still popular with local customers who spend time abroad.

Colorful trends, growing sales

Amina al Jassim is just one example of Islamic designers whose business has grown rapidly over the past few years. Today she has three stores in Saudi Arabia, sells her clothes at high-end boutiques across the Middle East, including Harvey Nichols and says she is making in-roads at Harrods in London. Al Jassim spoke to CNN from Lebanon where she had been flown to dress contestants on "The Gulf Star," an American Idol-like program on Dubai TV.

In Dubai up-and-coming designer Amber Feroz is helping set the pace of the new styles. Our fabric is very lightweight. We use a lot of colors" Feroz told CNN. In his latest collection for the Miss Elegant Noura al Hashimi line, Feroz said he combined the concepts of jalabyas and traditional kimonos.

"We are expanding as a brand to sell all over Gulf," he said, adding that the company also had their eye on moving into European and Asian markets.

In Egypt, where fewer women wear the abaya, but an increasing number are wearing the traditional hijab head coverings, Wegdan Hamza has become something of a national style star. Not only does she outfit local celebrities with her hijabs, but she appears on programs like Dream TV's "The Latest Fashion" to discuss current trends.

"God makes us beautiful and he likes the beauty, so we have to mix and match our outfit correctly, in colors materials and style," Hamza told CNN. "It is illogical for everyone to look the same."

"Not to see through or describe the body -- those are the rules. After that I have the freedom to put on whatever I want," she added.

Hamza's collection of hijabs include everything from the casual and cotton, to trendy -- embellished with flowers or coins, to bridal -- topped with crowns. Currently she says she's feeling the recession pinch, but business has been steadily growing for several years, particularly her online sales to Europe and North America.

Of the designers interviewed only Hamza acknowledged some cultural pressure or criticism to design less showy clothes, but said that she dismisses it completely. The other said women were waiting for their clothing.

(Reuters) - Mourners from close family to complete strangers grieved on Sunday over the loss of 20 children and six adults in a shooting rampage at a Newtown, Connecticut elementary school.

CHARLOTTE BACON, 6, pleaded to wear her new pink dress and boots to school on Friday, even though the outfit was supposed to be kept for the holidays. Her mother finally relented, her family told local media. Her brother Guy was also at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday and survived.

A photograph of 7-year-old DANIEL BARDEN shows a happy red-haired boy missing his two front teeth. His family described him as "always smiling, unfailingly polite, incredibly affectionate, fair and so thoughtful towards others, imaginative in play, both intelligent and articulate in conversation: in all, a constant source of laughter and joy.

OLIVIA ENGEL, 6, was supposed to have been an angel in a live nativity performance at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church on Friday night. In an online obituary, a family friend called her a "wiggly, smiley 6-year-old."

JESSE LEWIS, 6, was a jokester who loved to make funny faces and clown around, neighbors told a local newspaper.

His mother Scarlett Lewis breeds horses and wrote a children's book "Rose's Foal" about a mare sharing wisdom and love with her foal, Little Chief.
